Suncheon City announced that it has been selected as the finalist for the '2026 Living-centered National Sports Center Construction Project' organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, securing 50 billion won in national funding. This accomplishment was made possible by highlighting the need for additional public sports facilities in connection with the Yeonhyangdol Urban Development Project. After passing through the initial screening, on-site inspection, and presentation evaluation rounds in October, November, and December respectively, Suncheon City was ultimately chosen. The city plans to build a specialized sports facility in Yeonhyangdol that can be used by both disabled and non-disabled individuals. This facility, which will have cultural, residential, and sports functions, is expected to serve as the core infrastructure for the self-sufficient Yeonhyangdol urban development project. The project, scheduled to run from 2026 to 2029, will involve a total investment of 200 billion won, with 50 billion won provided by the national government and 150 billion won by the city. Key facilities to be included are: ▲ 10-court badminton hall, ▲ aquatic exercise room, ▲ badminton specialized training center, and ▲ smart badminton court. The final layout will be determined through consultations with the Suncheon Disabled Sports Association, the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, and professional organizations. A city official stated, "The Yeonhyangdol Bandaabi National Sports Center (proposed name) will provide a space where people with disabilities can participate in sports activities without constraints, as well as a unifying, inclusive sports facility for all citizens. We will strive to provide sports welfare that satisfies our citizens and contribute to Suncheon becoming a sports hub in the South Coast and Namjeon regions."
